Angel Tang, Esq. interviews Alisa Hartsell, an adjunct professor and a doctoral candidate at the Texas State University searching political asylum in the United States specifically in connection with Chinese political asylum seekers.
Alisa first explains her undergraduate studies on East Asian civilization and Chinese history, which led to her interest in the Pershing Chinese and political asylum in the US. She moves on to introduce the step-by-step process of applying for asylum after differentiating the affirmative from the defensive process. Then she introduces the websites and databases that contain resources for asylum seekers.
As Alisa points out in her findings that the asylum-seeking process has been a "word of mouth" situation--she invites everyone from the audiences who have successfully applied for asylum to share with other seekers their knowledge and experiences. Moreover, Angel and Alisa both address the significance of a good immigration lawyer in the application process.
Lastly, Alisa answers some frequently asked questions among the Chinese asylum seekers group including:
(1) the change in the application process since the Trump administration;
(2) how to avoid a harsh interviewer and educate the interviewers on the situation in the applicants' home countries;
(3) the impact of Covid-19 on political asylum in the past year;
(4) her opinion on the abjection of Asian Americans and the discourse on diversity;
(5) the consequence of faking an asylum application.
